Summary / Read source ↗

- Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman announced that going forward, they will no longer use nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) with government agencies during the new data center construction permit process. - Data center projects have faced criticism for lack of transparency, as they are often revealed only after permits are granted and developers frequently cut contact with residents. Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has also criticized NDAs for limiting local residents' access to information. - Amazon claims that its data centers consume only 0.5% compared to U.S. industrial water use and emphasizes that rising electricity rates are due to underinvestment in aging power grid infrastructure. - Discussions are ongoing in the U.S. to temporarily halt (100) or place a moratorium on data center permits, while Amazon states that over the past 3 years, it has contributed more than 10 billion dollars to communities where its data centers are located.

Amazon's announcement that it will no longer use NDAs seems like an effort to regain some trust with the community. However, the claims about water usage and electricity bills still rely solely on the company's own data without independent verification, which raises concerns. Considering there are many moratorium cases in the US right now, we'll need to watch closely how transparently Amazon shares information and how actively they engage with local residents to truly rebuild trust.
