About and FAQ
What is StartupXO?
A place to read and discuss changes in technology, products, life, work and business. We provide context for newcomers and evidence for readers who want to go deeper. You can join in with something you tried or a question you have.
Can I write in my own language?
Write once in Korean, English, Japanese, Spanish or Arabic. Posts, comments and replies are translated into each reader's language, while votes and discussions stay together. While a translation is being prepared, we show its status and the original.
What if a translation is wrong?
Use "Read in the original language" to check numbers, names and conditions, then choose "Report a translation issue". Moderators can review the report, and the page shows when a translation is being rechecked. Editing always opens the original, not its translation.
How do sharing and language URLs work?
The share button sends one short link to the same post. It opens the reader's chosen or browser language. Every page uses /ko/, /en/, /ja/, /es/ or /ar/, with search metadata and sharing images in that language.
What does XO mean?
XO is a recommendation for more people to read a post. We display real votes only. Community submissions begin with one vote from the author; editorial posts begin at zero. Votes from other sites are not added.
How do I use O and X?
Use O: for possible uses and X: for points to examine. Both are optional. You can share an experience or question without a marker, or include both perspectives in one comment.
What discoveries do you collect?
We look at public sources such as Hacker News, GitHub, TechCrunch and The Verge for changes in technology and products that affect life and work, including user experience and consumer perspectives. We collect only stories with readable sources, every two hours, up to three per run and 24 per day. Links are not repeated.
How are posts ranked?
Recommendations, comments and time since publication affect ranking. Posts move down over time, and heavily flagged posts leave the front page. New shows posts in publication order.
How are posts categorized?
Ask XO is for questions, Show XO for things you made, and Job XO for jobs and collaborators. Choose a section with "Ask XO:", "Show XO:" or "Job XO:" at the start of your title, or let the content determine it. You can correct the category by adding a prefix within two hours of posting.
How do summaries differ from editorial opinions?
Summaries contain facts and conditions checked against the source. "Editorial opinion" identifies the editorial account's observations about notable details, questions or possible uses. Reply with your own experience or other evidence.
Why is my own writing hidden?
Content awaiting review or hidden is visible only to its author and moderators. If you think it was hidden by mistake, contact hello@startupxo.com. A moderator can review and restore it.
What is contribution?
It is the recommendations other people give your posts and comments, minus downvotes. Flagging unlocks at 10 contribution, and comment downvotes at 100.
Why are some names green?
These accounts are less than 14 days old. New accounts can publish up to 2 posts and 20 comments per day.
Can I upload images?
Conversations use text and links. Image files cannot be uploaded. Share a link to the page containing the image instead.
Can I edit or delete my content?
You can edit posts and comments within two hours and delete them at any time. The editor opens the original. Editing triggers new translations; deleting the original also deletes its translations.
What happens to duplicate links?
If the same link was posted within the past 30 days, you are directed to that post. Discussions about the same link stay together even when people submit in different languages.
How do I sign in?
Sign in with Google. Reading is open without an account; recommending, commenting and posting require sign-in. Choose a name before your first contribution.
How can I delete my account?
Contact hello@startupxo.com. Account deletion clears the content of your posts and comments and releases your name.
Is RSS available?
Subscribe to the front page at /ko/rss.xml, /en/rss.xml, /ja/rss.xml, /es/rss.xml or /ar/rss.xml. Each section also has a feed.
