- Intel's LGA 1700 socket supported both DDR4 and DDR5 when it launched in 2021 with the 12th-generation Alder Lake CPUs. Intel switched to DDR5 only in 2024, but according to Gigabyte, dual support is returning, and chips due in early 2027 may be able to use DDR4. - On the AMD side, Gigabyte announced a new motherboard series for the AM4 platform that supports DDR4 in August. According to the original article, it came alongside the re-release marking the 10 anniversary of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D launch. - The prices the reporter checked directly, for a Corsair Vengeance 32GB kit, were 620 for DDR5 and 260 for DDR4. These are prices for specific products at the time the original article was written, so there is no basis to assume the same gap applies to other products or the wider market. - The original article acknowledges that DDR5 has advantages in speed and power efficiency, but questions whether the current price gap is worth those advantages.

The gap between DDR4 kits at 260 and DDR5 at 620 is the first thing that stands out. However, the article only confirmed the price of a Corsair 32GB kit that the reporter saw, and Gigabyte's plan to launch in early 2027. Intel did not give an official answer. If you are replacing memory now, it is more practical to compare price differences at the same capacity and check whether the speed gain is actually needed for your work. If you recently bought a DDR4 kit, I am curious how much you paid.
