Summary / Read source ↗

- Petra Power is a company founded in 2017 that sells solid oxide fuel cells made from ceramic materials. The source says it makes electricity through a chemical reaction without burning fuels such as natural gas. - Founder Aaron Goodman told TechCrunch that fuel and emissions costs are lower than conventional power generation, and that the devices are small and light, so they need less installation space. This is the company's claim, and the source has no independent measurements or verification results. - The customers are two: data centers and the Department of Defense. On the data center side, the company said it is working with infrastructure companies one tier below large cloud companies, but did not disclose specific contracts. The first batch target is 2028, and the full mass production target is 2029. - On the military side, the goal is an auxiliary power source that supplies electricity to vehicle equipment while the driving engine is off. The product is not yet installed in actual vehicles and is in testing, and the government is deciding whether to adopt it. The contract with the Department of Defense is said to be close to $9 million.

Rather than the power unit itself, the setup that supplies electricity to the equipment while the vehicle is switched off caught my eye first. However, the article only confirms the test stage and the size of the Ministry of Defense contract close to $9 million, and says the system has not yet been installed on an actual vehicle, so I read the expected speed a bit more conservatively. Installation costs and maintenance conditions are missing, so it is hard to tell from this article alone whether it will actually reduce power costs. I am curious what criteria you use to view the first data center deployment plan for 2028.
