Summary / Read source ↗

- This note describes a web textbook that teaches calculus with the Julia programming language, centered on graphs and numerical computation. The source explains that each page focuses on one concept, like a section in a book. - At the end of each page there are practice problems, and the source says a limited number of answers are provided so readers can check their own work. Julia is mainly used for numerical computation, with algebraic solutions added on, and the source also stresses the value of trying problems by hand first. - The CalculusWithJulia package used alongside it is introduced as reducing common tasks to simple functions. Installing Julia is described as easy with the juliaup tool, and the source does not state costs or license terms.

The part that caught my eye first is that you have to assemble the PDF yourself, and the result is not optimal. If you only plan to use web notes, that doesn't matter, but if you're someone who will carry this around offline, you should think through this part in advance. The article's claim that installing Julia is simple with juliaup is just the original guide's suggestion, so I think you'll only know whether it actually runs smoothly on your own computer by trying it yourself. I'm curious whether there are people for whom an approach that starts with graphs and numbers works well.
