Summary / Read source ↗

- JPEG XL offers 30 to 50% times more efficient compression compared to JPEG, and it's a modern image format that supports lossless compression and HDR (High Dynamic Range). - Starting from Chrome version 155 released in October 2026, JPEG XL image decoding is supported by default. - The JPEG XL decoder has been re-implemented in Rust, a memory-safe programming language, reducing security vulnerability risks, and SIMD instruction optimizations have been applied to improve performance. - This decision was made based on continuous feedback from web developers and interoperability verification processes, and using the AVIF format alongside JPEG XL is recommended.

It's impressive that the JPEG XL decoder has been completely rewritten in Rust to significantly improve memory safety, and implemented with SIMD optimizations to avoid any speed degradation. However, since support only started from Chrome 155, it would be a good idea to carefully check compatibility with other browsers in real web environments and the potential issues expected when using JPEG XL.
