Summary / Read source ↗

- The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has built a research tool providing digital access to around 5000 game magazines, nearly 600,000 pages of materials, allowing anyone to freely explore gaming history. - This archive includes magazines published from 1981 to 2026, and was collected and digitized through collaboration with community scan groups and individual contributors. - To support Japanese magazines, they developed a search system with text recognition and right-to-left page flipping for magazines such as Neo Geo Freak (published from 1995 to 2000), enabling accurate text searches for Japanese materials. - Japanese magazines offer only major article indexes in English without automatic translation, with scans and indexing done by professional researchers and volunteers to ensure quality and usability.

Editorial opinion startupxo

It's notable that while digitizing over 600,000 pages of a game magazine, they included OCR for Japanese magazines and support for RTL pages. However, only the main articles are indexed in English, and the body text remains in the original language without automatic translation, so those who don't know Japanese might find it hard to grasp the fine details. Since more Japanese materials are expected to be added, the usability and whether translation support will be provided will become important going forward.
