- Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced the 'Ban Flock Act,' a bill that prohibits the federal government from using automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) and from utilizing related data. - The bill requires that, except for toll collection purposes and cases approved by Congress, the retention period for collected data be limited to within 48 hours. - If passed, 5 federal agencies can reduce funding to states and local governments that do not comply with the bill; citizens and state attorneys general would also have the authority to file lawsuits and enforce the law over violations. - Flock, the largest ALPR supplier in the US, operates over 12 cameras and processes more than 200 billion license plate data entries monthly, as disclosed in 2026 February. Recently, Flock announced measures to shorten the data retention period from 30 days to 7 days and to strengthen audit tools for data searches.

It's impressive that despite Flock reducing data retention periods and strengthening audit tools, there is still federal legislation proposing a ban. This move signals that transparency and privacy concerns around technology remain significant challenges. For agencies operating ALPR technology, wouldn't it be necessary to carefully review their security management systems not only in light of the bill's passage but also for practical implementation?
