- Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the 'Ban Flock Act' to prohibit the federal government's use of automatic license plate readers (ALPR) and related data use. - The bill requires that data retention be limited to within 48 hours, except for toll collection and Congress-approved uses. - Upon passage, 5 federal agencies could cut grants to states and local governments that fail to comply, and citizens and state attorneys general would have authority to sue and enforce against violations. - Flock, the largest ALPR supplier in the US, operates over 120,000 cameras and processes more than 20 billion license plate records monthly, as reported in 2026 year February. Recently, Flock shortened data retention from 30 days to 7 days and strengthened its audit tools for searches.

It's impressive that despite Flock reducing data retention periods and strengthening audit tools, there is still federal legislation proposing a ban. This move signals that transparency and privacy concerns around technology remain significant challenges. For agencies operating ALPR technology, wouldn't it be necessary to carefully review their security management systems not only in light of the bill's passage but also for practical implementation?
