- A video by Dr. Ning Xu, who placed 1th in Nikon's Small World in Motion contest, was disqualified for violating the contest's generative AI rule. According to a BBC report, the video was described as showing cilia moving in a child's airway. - In a LinkedIn comment, Dr. Xu acknowledged that she used unsupervised neural network-based AI post-processing to bring out features in black-and-white images obtained through super-resolution optical imaging. - Nikon said it reviewed the video after questions about its authenticity appeared online, and that it will again examine its rules and evaluation procedures. It also stated that the disqualification decision was not a judgment about the researcher's reputation, scientific contribution, or intent.

What I most want to know is where the line falls for judging generative AI when the processing is the same kind of post-processing. The article does not explain how it separates ordinary corrections like noise reduction or brightness adjustment, so entrants may be at a loss over how to keep work records. Since Nikon said it would review the rules, it will be worth watching how those standards are clarified.
